Day 65: “Sorry you got caught” vs. actually sorry. | The Walk Out
There are two kinds of sorry. They sound the same and they are not the same.
TODAY’S TRUTH Sorry you got caught is not repentance. Actually sorry is.
THE READ “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” — 2 Corinthians 7:10
Two sorrows. One leads to life. The other one kills.
In your own words — what's this saying to you?
THE REAL Sorry you got caught sounds like:
- “I should have been more careful.”
- “I shouldn’t have trusted that person.”
- “If only I hadn’t gotten busted.”
- “I’d never have done it if I knew I’d be in this much trouble.”
- “I’m sorry I made everyone go through this.”
- “This isn’t fair, the punishment doesn’t match what I did.”
Notice what’s missing. The actual person you hurt. The actual harm you caused. The actual wrongness of the thing apart from getting caught.
Actually sorry sounds like:
- “I hurt that person.”
- “What I did was wrong, period — separate from getting caught.”
- “I would change it if I could.”
- “I’m not asking for the punishment to go away. I deserve it.”
- “I want to do whatever I can to make it right.”
The difference is the focus. Sorry you got caught is focused on you. Actually sorry is focused on what you did and who you did it to.
This is one of the most uncomfortable distinctions to look at honestly because most of us have been operating on sorry-you-got-caught for years and calling it repentance.
If you find that what you’ve been calling sorry is actually sorry-you-got-caught — you’re not a fraud, you’re just human. Most of us are there. The work is to convert it. Move from focus on consequences to focus on what you actually did.
PULL UP Look at the things you’ve apologized for in your life. Which ones were actually sorry, and which ones were sorry you got caught?
Write it out — don't just think it:
THE MOVE Today, take one thing you’ve been “sorry” for and convert it. Say to God: “I haven’t actually been sorry for [thing]. I’ve been sorry I got caught. The actual wrong was [actual wrong]. I’m starting to be sorry for the right reason.”
Did it today? ☐ Yes ☐ Not yet — what happened when you did?
TRACK IT What did you have to convert?
