(speaking in foreign language) - I'm thankful to God for another opportunity to gather together to worship Him. (speaking in foreign language) - If you're new with us this morning. (speaking in foreign language) - If you're visiting for the first time. (speaking in foreign language) - We wanna welcome you. (speaking in foreign language) - We're so glad that you've chosen to be here with us this morning. (speaking in foreign language) - We're in the middle of a series called The Miracles of Christ. (speaking in foreign language) - And we're looking at some of the miracles that Jesus performed during His earthly ministry. (speaking in foreign language) - So if you have your Bible, go with me to Matthew chapter nine. (speaking in foreign language) - We'll be reading and studying verses one through eight. (speaking in foreign language) - Let's read this together. (speaking in foreign language)

- In getting into a boat, He crossed over and came to His own city. (speaking in foreign language) - And behold, some people brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son. "Your sins are forgiven." (speaking in foreign language) - And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." - (speaking in foreign language) - But Jesus knowing their thoughts said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts?" - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - For which is easier to say, your sins are forgiven or to say rise and walk? - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - But that you may know, the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. He then said to the paralytic rise, "Pick up your bed and go home." (speaking in foreign language) - And he rose? (speaking in foreign language) - Sorry. And he rose and went home.

(speaking in foreign language) - And when the crowds saw it, they were afraid and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men. (speaking in foreign language) - This is the word of God for the people of God. (speaking in foreign language) - Thanks be to God. (speaking in foreign language) - Let's pray. (speaking in foreign language) - Thank you for your word, Lord. (speaking in foreign language) - Please open our eyes to behold wonderful things from your word. (speaking in foreign language) - Please speak to us through your word this morning. (speaking in foreign language) - Please bless it to our hearts. (speaking in foreign language) - It's in your holy and precious name, Jesus we pray. (speaking in foreign language) - So up to this point, Jesus had been performing miracles and casting out demons. (speaking in foreign language) - And at the end of chapter eight. (speaking in foreign language) - Jesus is chased out of the country of the gatherings. (speaking in foreign language) - And here's what happened. (speaking in foreign language)

- He was approached by two demon possessed men. (speaking in foreign language) "And they recognized Jesus and they acknowledged him as the Son of God." "And there was a herd of pigs nearby and they begged Jesus to cast them into the herd of pigs." "And then the pigs ran into the sea and drowned." "And the herdsmen weren't too happy about this." "Because they ran to the city to tell everyone what happened." "Because they ran to the city to tell everyone what happened." "Because they ran to the city to tell everyone what happened." "Because they ran to the city to tell everyone what happened." "And it says all the people of the city came to meet Jesus." "But they didn't come to worship him." "It says they begged him to leave." "It might have been because they were upset about losing all their livestock." "And the reason they didn't want Jesus to stick around." "So Jesus leaves?" "And that brings us to chapter 9." "Let's read verses 1 and 2 again." "And getting into the boat he crossed over and came to his own city." "And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart my son. Your sins are forgiven." "So Jesus gets into a boat and crosses over to his own city." "Mathu doesn't name the city but we know it's Capernaum." "Jesus was raised in Nazareth." "But Capernaum was the headquarters for his earthly ministry." "It's where he performed a lot of his miracles." "So he was known by the people there." "And it says they brought to Jesus a paralyzed man lying on a bed."

"So this same event is also recorded in Mark chapter 2 and in Luke chapter 5." "And they provide more details for us." In Mark's account it says that Jesus was at a home. "And that the house was completely full." "It says there was no room, not even at the door." "So the people must have been shoulder to shoulder." "And these four men tried bringing the paralyzed men inside to Jesus." "But they couldn't get to him." "Because it was too crowded and the entrance was blocked." "It says they went up on the roof." "And they started removing the roof." "Jesus is in the house preaching the gospel to the crowd." "The house is absolutely packed." "Everyone's listening to Jesus." "And then all of a sudden it starts to sound like the roof is caving in." "I imagine there's probably stuff falling from the ceiling on people." And there's a video? These men begin lowering the paralyzed man down in front of Jesus. How much of the crowd is probably thinking, what is happening right now? Jesus knows exactly what's happening. He doesn't get angry with them for causing all the commotion. He doesn't get angry with them for interrupting his preaching. He doesn't turn them away or tell them to come back later. I'm just picturing Jesus standing there with a big grin on his face. Because he knows exactly what's going on. He knows these men are trying to get to him. Jesus receives all who come to him in faith. The men were absolutely determined to get to Jesus. And they demonstrated their faith and their efforts to get the paralyzed man to Jesus. They had faith that Jesus would receive them and show them compassion.

They had faith that Jesus would do what only he could do. They were confident that he wouldn't turn them away or fail them. Because Jesus will never turn away those who humbly come to him. There's not one example in the Gospel where Jesus turns away a repentant sinner who comes to him. One of my favorite verses in the Bible. John 6, 37. All that the Father gives me will come to me. And whoever comes to me I will never cast out. This is a verse you want to hide in your heart. When Satan tempts you to despair. You can fight with this promise. He will never turn away a sinner who comes to him in faith. It doesn't matter what your past is. If you come to Christ he will not turn you away. Some of you may be doubting. And pastor I'm just too sinful. I've done terrible things. I feel like I'm just the worst sinner in the world. I know the feeling. Come to Christ. Call at his feet. He will receive you. He will never cast you out. He is merciful. His grace abounds. Even if you are the worst sinner on the earth. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] >> Were the seed increase? >> Sobre Abundo la gracia.

(speaking in foreign language) >> Mommy, we must come like the paralyzed man in this story. (speaking in foreign language) >> We must come desperate. (speaking in foreign language) >> We must come hopeless. (speaking in foreign language) >> We must come as beggars. (speaking in foreign language) >> We must come with empty hands. (speaking in foreign language) >> Because we have nothing to offer him. (speaking in foreign language) >> As one pastor says. (speaking in foreign language) >> It's only with empty hands of faith. (speaking in foreign language) >> That we can grab the hands of grace. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) >> Jesus promises to welcome all who come broken, empty-handed, and willing to embrace him. (speaking in foreign language) >> And here's the promise to every sinner

who comes to him in faith. (speaking in foreign language) >> Your sins are forgiven. (speaking in foreign language) >> These are the most beautiful words a sinner can hear. (speaking in foreign language) >> The paralytic came wanting to be healed. (speaking in foreign language) >> And he received something even better. (speaking in foreign language) >> He received what he needed. (speaking in foreign language) >> And that's the second point. (speaking in foreign language) >> Our greatest need is not physical. Our greatest need is Jesus himself. (speaking in foreign language) >> When the men lowered the paralytic down at Jesus' feet, Jesus did not immediately heal him. (speaking in foreign language) >> He sees their faith. (speaking in foreign language) >> And then he tells the man's son, your sins are forgiven. (speaking in foreign language) >> The man receives what he needs more than being physically healed. (speaking in foreign language) >> He receives divine forgiveness. (speaking in foreign language)

>> His greatest need was not physical. (speaking in foreign language) >> Your greatest need is not physical. (speaking in foreign language) >> Your greatest need is to be reconciled to God through Christ. (speaking in foreign language) >> Sadly, this passage is abused by false teachers. (speaking in foreign language) >> They'll use this passage to emphasize physical healing. (speaking in foreign language) >> They'll claim that physical sickness and suffering is not part of God's will for your life. (speaking in foreign language) >> And they'll argue that if you're physically ill or suffering, then it's your fault because your faith is deficient. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) >> This is dangerous, and it's just not true. (speaking in foreign language) in your life. Our greatest need is not to be relieved of physical sickness and suffering. We can be healed, we can be healthy, we can be wealthy, we can be prosperous, we can be healthy, we can have food, we can have clothing, we can have shelter, we can have all of those things, but if we don't have Christ, we have nothing. We can have all of our physical needs met. We can have all of our physical needs met. But if we don't have Jesus Himself, then we are absolutely hopeless. He is all we have. And He is all we need. And He is all we need. Now I want to be clear. Meeting physical needs is vitally important. We should be eager to show kindness and compassion to those in need, to the glory of God.

To show kindness and compassion to those in need, to the glory of God. And I'm thankful that we are a church focused on doing that. One example is the work that our church is doing at Southwest High School. And if you're interested in serving at Southwest, please talk to Jose. God is blessing that work. We're working to meet physical needs of Spanish-speaking families at Southwest. And as we're meeting those physical needs, the Lord's opening doors for us to share the gospel. And that's what we're continually praying for. We're praying for the Lord to open doors for the gospel. Because faith comes through hearing and hearing through the Word of Christ. But how will people hear if we don't speak? We must tell people the good news. They must hear how they can be saved and reconciled to God. They must hear about the Savior. Because a person's greatest need is Jesus Himself. And we freely receive Jesus Himself and all of His benefits through faith alone. All of our sins are forgiven. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to us. And we are adopted into the family of God forever. So when we come to Jesus in faith, he tells us the same thing he told the paralytic. Son, your sins are forgiven. - Praise be to God. (speaking in foreign language) - And that brings us to the third point. (speaking in foreign language) - Jesus has the authority to forgive our sins. (speaking in foreign language) - Look at verses three through seven. (speaking in foreign language) - Daniel will read these again for us in Spanish.

(speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - The Pharisees were thinking to themselves that Jesus was a blasphemer. (speaking in foreign language) - They did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. (speaking in foreign language) - They knew that only God had the authority to forgive sins. (speaking in foreign language) - And they were right. (speaking in foreign language) - Only God himself can forgive our sins. (speaking in foreign language) - So what the Pharisees refused to believe is that Jesus is God in human flesh. (speaking in foreign language) - They refused to believe that he was the promised Messiah. (speaking in foreign language) - And they failed to see that Jesus is the one Isaiah spoke about. (speaking in foreign language) - The one who would make the lame walk. (speaking in foreign language) - The one who would give sight to the blind. (speaking in foreign language) - The one who would make the deaf hear. (speaking in foreign language)

- The one who would preach good news to the poor. (speaking in foreign language) - The one who would die for the sins of his people. (speaking in foreign language) - Look at verse four. (speaking in foreign language) - How does Jesus know their thoughts? (speaking in foreign language) - Because he is God. (speaking in foreign language) - God is omniscient. (speaking in foreign language) - He's all knowing. (speaking in foreign language) - And Jesus knew their hearts were filled with unbelief. (speaking in foreign language) - He knew exactly what they were thinking. (speaking in foreign language) - He knew they were questioning his authority in their hearts. (speaking in foreign language) - He knew they were thinking evil thoughts. (speaking in foreign language) - So I imagine they were a little surprised when Jesus turned to them and said, "Why are you thinking evil thoughts?" (speaking in foreign language) - And they're probably thinking, "How does he know what I'm thinking?" (speaking in foreign language) - 'Cause he is God.

(speaking in foreign language) - In verse six, he says. (speaking in foreign language) - That you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. (speaking in foreign language) - Jesus is about to obliterate every excuse they have for not believing. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - So he turns to the paralytic. (speaking in foreign language) - He says, "Rise, pick up your bed and go home." (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - Immediately, the man rose and went home. (speaking in foreign language) - It's a divine miracle. (speaking in foreign language) - There's no other explanation. (speaking in foreign language) - Only God can do this. (speaking in foreign language) - So what's Jesus doing here? (speaking in foreign language) - He's proving that he is God and that he has the authority to forgive sins. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language)

- Jesus is eliminating any excuse they could have. (speaking in foreign language) - They will not have any excuses for their rejection and unbelief after this. (speaking in foreign language) - This was an opportunity for them to repent and believe. (speaking in foreign language) - But we know the religious leaders continue to reject them. (speaking in foreign language) - They continue to try really hard to discredit him and eventually crucify him. (speaking in foreign language) - Look at verse eight. (speaking in foreign language) - It says the crowd was afraid. (speaking in foreign language) - In Mark's account, it says the crowd was amazed. (speaking in foreign language) - Many people were amazed by the miracles of Jesus during his earthly ministry. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - But that didn't mean they had saving faith in him. (speaking in foreign language) - For example, in John chapter six. (speaking in foreign language) - After Jesus feeds the 5,000. (speaking in foreign language) - The people were amazed by the miracle and they were following him.

(speaking in foreign language) - But they were following him because they wanted food. (speaking in foreign language) - Jesus knew this because he knows what's in the heart. (speaking in foreign language) - And he told them. (speaking in foreign language) - You're not seeking me because you want me. (speaking in foreign language) - You're only following me because of what I can give you. (speaking in foreign language) - You're only seeking me because you want food. (speaking in foreign language) - So then he declares, I am the bread of life. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - Come to me and you will never hunger. (speaking in foreign language) - Believe in me and you will have eternal life. (speaking in foreign language) - But what did many of them do? (speaking in foreign language) - They walked away. (speaking in foreign language) - They were amazed by what Jesus could do. (speaking in foreign language) - But they didn't truly believe in him and submit to him. (speaking in foreign language) - Are you believing in him? (speaking in foreign language)

- Are you submitting to him? (speaking in foreign language) - This may have been the case for this particular crowd. (speaking in foreign language) - They were amazed by the miracle itself. (speaking in foreign language) And they glorified God. (speaking in foreign language) - But they might not have had or fully understood that the one performing the miracle was the son of God himself. (speaking in foreign language) - Jesus performed this miracle to prove that he is God and has the authority to forgive sense. (speaking in foreign language) - Every single human being desperately needs divine forgiveness. Every single human being desperately needs divine forgiveness. Without it, we remain guilty and utterly hopeless. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Divine forgiveness comes only through Christ Himself. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Not your pastor. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Not a priest. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Not the pope. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] And there's nothing that we ourselves can do to be forgiven. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] We cannot erase our sin dead. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE]

We cannot earn forgiveness through good works. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] We cannot work our way into the family of God. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] We cannot make ourselves clean. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Only the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Listen to this promise. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] 1 John 1 9. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] This is another promise you want to hide in your heart. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] You want to go to war with this promise. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] When Satan says, God doesn't love you. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] You're too sinful. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] You can't be forgiven. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Give up. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] He says, if we confess. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] He is faithful.

[SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] He is just. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] To forgive us. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] And cleanse us. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] He is just. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] His justice was satisfied on the cross. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Jesus paid the full penalty on the cross. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] And this is what we remember as we're preparing to come to the Lord's table this morning. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] We remember Christ and what He did for us on that cross. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] He shed his blood. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Because there's no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of blood. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] He took the punishment for our sin. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] He died our death. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] And he was raised for our justification. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Also that we can be completely forgiven and reconcile the God forever. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] So I want us to take this opportunity to examine our hearts.

[SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Is there any unconfessed sin we need to confess and repent of? [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Confess and repent. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] And remember that his blood cleanses from all sin. [SPEAKING PORTUGUESE] Did you hear this morning and you haven't trusted? (speaking in foreign language) - Then we do kindly ask that you refrain from protecting.
